The Hydra Project è un’iniziativa di Hackteria – Open Source Biological Art, che intende promuovere eventi artistici e culturali complementarmente alla missione dell’associazione che favorisce lo scambio di informazioni e lo sviluppo di progetti di tipo citizen’s science. L’artista di origine ecuadoriana Kuai Shen (nato a Guayaquil, Ecuador, 1978), è invitato a presentare il suo lavoro attraverso una video installazione, una performance, una conferenza e due workshop, che hanno luogo presso lo spazio Sonnenstube. Le sue installazioni audiovisive riflettono sulle analogie tra le colonie di formiche e la società umana, suggerendo strategie future per ripensare le relazioni personali e le costruzioni sociali. Kuai Shen presenta inoltre una performance insieme al chitarrista di origine argentina Auriel.

Durante due workshop, Kuai Shen istruisce i partecipanti come creare microfoni piezoelettrici per amplificare il suono di formiche e altri insetti. L’artista mostra come creare esperimenti sonori con oscillatori e amplificatori di segnale per simulare le vibrazioni acustiche delle formiche, fenomeno conosciuto con il termine di ‘stridulazione’.

Per l’occasione, è inoltre stampata in 200 esemplari l’Hydra Reader, una pubblicazione in forma di poster pieghevole che presenta il lavoro dell’artista attraverso immagini e testi e che è distribuita gratuitamente durante l’evento.

The Hydra Project is an initiative of Hackteria, which aims to foster artistic and literary ventures in addition to the association’s main mission of promoting knowledge sharing and citizen’s science. Ecuadorian artist Kuai Shen (born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, 1978), is invited to present a performance, two workshops, a lecture and a video installation at Sonnenstube. His audio-visual installations reflect on the relationship between ants and humans as a metaphor for a post-human ecology.
Kuai Shen will also perform live, together with Argentinian guitar player Auriel.
A workshop in two sessions is offered to anyone interested in understanding more about the devices used by the artist in his work and performances. It will also be an opportunity to learn more about the bioacustic phenomenon of stridulation, typical of ants and many other insects. Stridulation is a means of communication in the form of vibrations that ants produce by scratching their torso and subsequently perceive with their legs.
The Hydra Reader, printed as a compendium to the project, will be distributed during the event. It includes an essay by Kuai Shen, coupled with images of his work.
